Great Expectations at the Docklands Cinema Club

Docklands Cinema Club, Museum of London Docklands (London, UK)

To celebrate the opening of the Dickens and London exhibition at the Museum of London, David Lean's Academy Award-winning adaptation of the Dickens classic will be screened. The film will be introduced by John Oliver, Curator (Fiction) at the BFI National Archive. 7-9pm. Book in advance £7 (concs £5).

'Estella's Legacy' at Kent Libraries & Archives

The User Friendly Theatre Company presents 'Estella's Legacy' at Kent Libraries & Archives. A musical sequel to 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens, in the production, Estella is now a middle aged woman and trying to leave behind the sadness of the past and find a brighter future. The piece is performed by Anne Graydon and Clare Graydon-James, both professional singers and actresses. Performance starts at 3pm. Tel: 01322 488710.

Simon Callow: Charles Dickens & The Great Theatre of the World

‘Charles Dickens & The Great Theatre of the World’ is an entertaining biography which reveals an original genius, and offers a compelling insight into a life driven by performance. Simon Callow played Dickens in his hugely successful one-man show ‘The Mystery of Charles Dickens’ by Peter Ackroyd, as well as on television several times including ‘An Audience with Charles Dickens’ (BBC, 1996) and in ‘The Unquiet Dead’, a 2005 episode of the BBC series Doctor Who. In 2008, he appeared at the Edinburgh Festival performing two short plays by Dickens, "Dr Marigold" and "Mr Chops", which successfully toured last year.

The eminent actor, writer and director offers a fresh perspective on Dickens, uncovering not only a literary great but a true showman who adored the stage and became an early ‘celebrity’ author with his many theatrical reading tours. Victorian London is often portrayed as a city of darkness, oppression, crime and squalor but was this really the case? Renowned author and London psychogeographer, Iain Sinclair, considers the capital’s depiction in the literature of Charles Dickens and his contemporaries with Dr Sebastian Groes, author of The Making of London. 7-8pm. Visit the major new exhibition Dickens and London after-hours! Listen to live music from the London Gay Men's Chorus, take part in a pub quiz devised by the guys at Londonist.com, hear readings from Dickens's novels in the Museum's galleries and enjoy an alternative puppetry performance of A Christmas Carol. There will also be a paying cash bar serving festive food and drinks. Ticket price includes entrance to the exhibition. Please note that the galleries will close at 6pm and re-open for the entrance to the event at 6.30pm.
