San Francisco, The Cow Palace Exhibition Halls, USA
Fri, 23rd November 2012 - Sun, 23rd December 2012
Since 1970, the annual Great Dickens Christmas Fair & Victorian Holiday Party has been re-creating a magical imaginary corner of Charles Dickens’s London in the San Francisco Bay Area, as over 60,000 visitors each season step into a Victorian Christmas card come to life. The event, held each weekend between Thanksgiving and Christmas, is spread out over three-plus indoor acres of the historic Cow Palace Exhibition Halls. The Fair’s skilled lighting technicians and set designers create a lamp-lit maze of streets lined with shops, theatres, eateries, music halls, craft stalls, social clubs, pubs - even a rollicking lowlife dockside area. Throughout the Fair, over 700 costumed performers bring to life literary, actual, and imaginary characters of Dickens’s London, ranging from Father Christmas and Alice in Wonderland to the rowdy denizens of Mad Sal’s Dockside Alehouse, Ebenezer Scrooge, Queen Victoria, and Charles Dickens himself. Children’s activities include games, crafts and plays; after dark, grownups may enjoy the Dark Garden Corset Show and the Naughty French Postcard Revue. In between, visitors may attend the many theater productions, sing carols, feast on holiday treats, dance in Fezziwig’s ballroom, shop for one-of-a-kind gifts, or simply stroll and immerse themselves in the lively entertainment-filled street scene. Jolly times abound!
