Charles Dickens: Australian Connections

Dixson Library, University of New England, Armidale New South Wales, Australia
Mon, 6th February 2012 - Sun, 29th April 2012

This exhibition portrays some of the Australian connections in Dickens’s life and writing through books, photographs and illustrations. It was through his weekly journals, 'Household words' (1850–1859) and 'All the year round' (1859–1895), that readers in England were introduced to Australia. From the very first issue, promoting Caroline Chisholm’s Family Colonisation Loan Society, Dickens portrayed Australia as a place for a new start and prosperous life. Letters home to England and articles by visitors and emigrants told of the ease of finding a friendly English neighbour, the generous and simple hospitality of people in the Bush and the ever present chance for success. Dickens sent two of his sons to Australia, it was his country of choice for the emigrating residents of the ‘penitent women’s’ home he managed, and many of his characters – Abel Magwitch, Wilkins Micawber and Emily and Daniel Peggoty – did find a new life in the Colony. The exhibition is curated by Ian Stephenson, University Curator, and Michelle Arens, UNE Art Collection Manager, with special assistance from J.S. Ryan, Professor of Folklore and Heritage with UNE Heritage Futures Research Centre. It is on display in Dixson Library from February through April 2012.
