Charles Dickens: A Southwark Childhood

Cuming Museum, London (UK)
Tue, 22nd May 2012 - Sat, 27th October 2012

This exhibition, which opens at Southwark’s Cuming Museum will explore Dickens’s experiences of the Borough area of Southwark during his time there in 1824. The places, people and living conditions he experienced during his short time in the area provided inspiration and context to many characters and narratives in his later writing. The exhibition explores these key locations, such as the Marshalsea Prison, St George the Martyr Church and Mint Street workhouse and how they influenced his novels. The exhibition will use objects, artworks and illustrations from the museum’s collection to map Dickens’ experiences and how they informed his writing. Alongside the exhibition there will be a lively events programme for adults and families.
