The Day Parliament Burned Down - Lunchtime talk
Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Sunderland (UK)
Tue, 20th March 2012 - Tue, 20th March 2012
In 1834, Dickens had just started his career as a Parliamentary reporter for the Morning Chronicle. Two months into his new job, the Houses of Parliament burnt down - a shattering event which he later used in his journalism, fiction and in his public lectures. This talk by Caroline Shenton, Clerk of the Records at the Parliamentary Archives, and author of 'The Day Parliament Burned Down', due to be published in September by OUP, will tell the story of this forgotten disaster, one that changed the shape of London and England forever.
