Sun, 5th August 2012 - Sat, 11th August 2012

Charles Dickens remains one of the most widely-read and adapted of all English novelists. This course provides an opportunity to learn how to read in-depth and enjoy Dickens by focusing on the celebrated novel 'Great Expectations'. We will examine the twists and turns of the plot, the characters (including the famous Miss Havisham), Dickens’s style and imagerym the symbolism of place and the book’s broader themes. We will consider the fascinating question of the novel’s several endings. The study of 'Great Expectations' will be supplemented by an exploration of Lloyd Jones’ novel 'Mister Pip' as an imaginative response to 'Great Expectations', plus extracts from a number of film and TV adaptations.
